Preliminary Conference on preparatory works of the 2008 Mekong-Can Tho National Tourist Year

(Cinet)- On 11th December 2007, the Steering Committee of the 2008 Mekong-Can Tho National Tourist Year held a Preliminary Conference on preparatory works of the 2008 Mekong-Can Tho National Tourist Year in Can Tho City. Attending the conference is high-ranking representatives of General Department of Tourism; Ministry of Communications and Transport; People’s Committee; Office of Tourism; Office of Trade and Tourism in 13 provinces of the Mekong river delta.

After six months of project implementation, the Steering Committee of the Tourist Year only attracted 1.6 billion dong (of which 1 billion dong in cash and 600 million dong were services). Particularly, two festivals in the opening week of the tourist year (Street festival and Ninh Kieu festival day) were sponsored package cost of 2.8 billion dong. 

The 2008 Mekong-Can Tho National Tourist Year will be opened in the following two months; however, several problems have not yet been solved. Ministries and Central Agencies have not adopted leading ideas or deep promotion and propaganda for the Tourist Year. Infrastructure construction works for the Tourist Year have been developed slowly, especially Cai Khe dune area – a place in which the opening ceremony will be taken place.

At the conference, Comrade Vo Thanh Tong, Chairman of Can Tho People’s Committee, and Head of Steering Committee of the 2008 Mekong-Can Tho National Tourist Year required the Steering Committee to strengthen widespread propaganda and promotion on the media strongly; and launch festivals’ socialization. As for Can Tho City, from now to February 2008, upgrading the place need be constructed promptly; roads and streets need be upgraded….
