Famous writer Nguyen Huy Thiep will go to Italy on January 23 to receive the Premio Nonino literature award, which has been presented to world famous authors like Jorge Amado, Claude Levi-Strauss and V.S. Naipaul.

“I’m very surprised because Vietnamese literature, particularly recent works, is not widely known widely in Italy,” said the Vietnamese writer.

Thiep received the invitation letter to attend the ceremony, held in Udine City, Italy on January 26. He said he will receive a bonus of Euro7,700.

Nonino is a famous wine in Italy. In 1977, the Nonino producer began to present the Premio Nonino literature awards to prestigious writers across the world. The award has been presented to famous writers including famous Brazilian author Jorge Amado, French author Claude Levi-Strauss, Booker 2005 winner John Banville, and Nobel laureate V.S. Naipaul.

Three of Nguyen Huy Thiep’s books have been published in Italy, including Retired General in 1990 by Euro Studio, Winds from Vietnam (including five short stories) and Salt of Forest (with 7 short stories) by Obarra publishing house.

Thiep said this will be his second visit to Italy. The writer attended a literature festival in Mantova in 2005.

Nguyen Huy Thiep, 57, is one of Vietnam’s most important contemporary authors. He has written 50 short stories, 10 dramas, four novels as well as published various literary criticisms and notes. His work has been translated into several languages.

In July 2007, the French Government conferred on Thiep the Art and Literature Medal.
