A charity auction of sculptures created by local artists has raised US$34,100 at a sale held on Friday evening at Bach Tung Diep Park in Ho Chi Minh City's District 1.

The auction, which was part of the “Spiritual Life of Saigonese” exhibition, raised money to assist orphans, disabled children and residents of flood-hit areas.

Five out of the six artworks put up for auction sold, with Thanh en's stainless steel sculpture “Taking Off” fetching the highest price of $5,500 when bought by real estate and construction company Hoa Binh.

The Thu Duc Joint-stock Housing Development Company bought Phan Phuong's “Family” sculpture and Luong Van Thach's “Eternal Love” for $4,500 each.

The Dat Lanh Company paid $4,000 for “Compatriots” and donated $1,000 to the fund.

The Australian Chamber of Commerce (Auscham) paid $4000 for Bui Hai Son's “The Seed”, while Pham Viet Hung’s “Throne 1” was bought by a local man for $2,600.

“The total of $34,100 is not a big amount, but it proves that the auction was successful,” artist Pham Do Dong, vice president of HCM City Fine Arts Association, said.

“Money is not everything here as it is a good opportunity for kind-hearted people to meet,” Mr. Dong added.

The sculptures will be on display until this Sunday.
