In a bid to infuse life into Hung Trach Commune’s cultural treasure called tuong (classical drama) and integrate it into the local tourism industry, a project took its first step and put on a special tuong performance on February 29.
Viet Nam National Tuong Theatre’s reputed artists and local amateur performers joined hands in this special tuong performance, which drew a large audience from the provincial state agencies, Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park, Department of Phong Nha’s Culture, Tourism and Ecology, international non-governmental organizations, as well as local people.
The traditional art of tuong can trace its roots in Hung Trach Commune, Bo Trach district, back tens of centuries, which is why it is revered by the community as invaluable to its heritage. Unfortunately the locals have failed to keep their unique art alive because of their tough living conditions.
The project, which is supported by Counterpart International and funded by
By passing the baton to young local performers, largely through the assistance of the Viet Nam National Tuong Theatre, the project expects to resurred the dying art forms in its eight-month period. All the required equipment, including costumes, musical instruments and cosmeties, are being provided by the project’s financial aid.
Along with resurrecting and then preserving this unique art form, the project also hopes to integrate it into a larger community-based tourism project.
This will include empowering locals with income-generating activities that will improve their lives and hopefully encourage them to protect their heritage.
