Art, photography and essay contests for youth to celebrate the importance of family will be held this year by the Russian Centre of Science and Culture, the centre announced in a press briefing on February, 25 in Ha Noi.

The centre outlined its agenda of activities for 2008 in a variety of fields, including culture, science, education and linguistics, with the aim to promote Russian culture, language and research in Viet Nam.

The youth competitions about the value of family will be organised with the help of Government agencies, non-governmental organisations and colleges and universities throughout Viet Nam.

The centre also plans to mount an exhibition at the Viet Nam National Library beginning on March 17 to present the best Russian books and newspapers in various fields with the support of the Russian Libraries Development Fund.

"We will contribute works of literature, textbooks, the latest scientific works and works on teaching methodology to the library," said centre director A.IU Lavrenev , who is also a counselor at the Russian Embassy in Viet Nam.

"The library readers club will hold many literary discussions and evening parties to introduce representative writers and artists from our country," Lavrenev said.

There will also be Russian language karaoke, "a favourite of young people," he added.

In April, the centre plans a Russian language olympiad that will also include a seminar and roundtable discussion on ways to improve Russian language teaching in Southeast Asia.

This summer, the centre will organise a camp for children with the International Russian Education Centre.

In September, the centre will celebrate its 5th anniversary in Viet Nam by hosting a seminar on technology to solve environmental problems in Southeast Asia. The seminar will feature the participation of environmental experts from Russia.
