The conference, organised by the Japan-Viet Nam Association in co-ordination with Hue University and the provincial authority of Thua Thien-Hue, was chaired by Fujio Cho, head of the Japan-Viet Nam Association, and Dr Nguyen Van Toan, director of Hue University.

The three-day conference offered an occasion for friendly discussions on the promotion of exchanges of distinguished individuals from Viet Nam and Japan.

The idea of the conference was first proposed by Kazuo Ogura, president of the Japan Foundation and a former Japanese ambassador to Viet Nam, who visited the country as the head of a Japanese cultural exchange mission in May 2005.

Based on his proposal, the two governments endorsed the opening of a bilateral cultural exchange forum in their joint statement issued during Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung’s visit to Japan in October 2006.

The Japan-Viet Nam Association was then entrusted with the responsibilities of organising such a forum, with financial support coming from the Japan Foundation.

The Hue Conference is expected to annualy convene, if possible, in the future, alternating between Viet Nam and Japan, according to organisers. _
