Handmade moon cakes – a wonderful thing for the mid-autumn festival

Cake market in Mid-Autumn Festival this year gets abundant than ever due to the presence of handmade moon cakes.

Celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, the Mooncake Festival or Mid-Autumn Festival, is a harvest festival that also celebrates the moon and traditionally is a time of family reunion and eating moon cakes, a pastry filled with bean paste. This year, the festival falls on September 8th and next year it will fall on September 27th. The dates are usually sometime in September or October. In the olden days, the festival was apparently a time to enjoy the successful reaping of rice and wheat with food offerings made in honor of the moon. Today, it is still an occasion for enjoyment and brings together friends and relatives in the gift giving of moon cakes.

People’s loyalty to traditional cakes is attributed to its special taste and the taste comes from the fresh ingredients and complicated process of making. Do Nang Ty, who has had more than 60 years making moon cake and is now owner of Do The Gia, says that Hanoi people are very meticulous in cooking and a ‘Banh nuong’ must have fat meat, chicken, Chinese sausages, melon seeds, seasame, almond in its content and fresh lemon leaves, young kumquat fruits, and a kind of scented wine called Mai Que Lo to make its flavour.

Cake market in Mid-Autumn Festival this year gets abundant than ever due to the presence of handmade moon cakes. Handmade moon cakes often have no additives, preservatives, abundant flavor, and various forms. However, the expiration date of these cakes is very short, not exceed 5 days and you need to make a reservation to buy them. It is not surprising when almost the youth likes handmade cakes due to their unique feature.
The mid-autumn festivla is a chance of union time among every one. Enjoying moon-cakes with various types brings people, especially children an attractive memory at childhood.
