Banh gio, a popular northern dish made from rice flour and pork is packaged in banana leaves.

Banh tro or banh gio are made of sticky rice, soaked into a mixture of xoan pit ashes and water, served with molasses. People from the Tay ethnic minority wrap banh khoai so in banana leaves. H’mong use banana leaves to cover banh ngo non.
Leaf-covered cakes are so popular because they are well suited to local conditions. Leaves provide a container in which certain foods may be cooked. They also help to preserve the food, forming a barrier from dirt and mold
