5. The museum of Vietnamese traditional medicine (Ho Chi Minh City)
This very first museum of traditional medicine in Vietnam has been skillfully crafted with stunning interiors made from wood. The core collection of the museum contains over 3,000 varieties of traditional Vietnamese medicines dating back to the Stone Ages. The collection also includes different tools that were used in the preparation of these medicines such as knives, grinders, mortars and pestles as well as an assortment of pots and jars. Some of these 2,500 year old knives, grinders, mortars and pestles used at that time for preparing the medicinal concoctions were brought from the homes of two of the founders of Vietnamese traditional medicine, Tue Tinh and Hai Thuong Lan Ong – Le Huu Trac. Visitors can move around the museum and experience a personal demonstration of the use of a grinding pot, watch a documentary about the history of Vietnamese traditional medicine or taste a cup of linh chi tea before leaving the museum. After the tour, visitors can even have a consultation with experienced oriental doctors.
6. Ao dai museum (Ho Chi Minh City)
Located in a garden house which boasts old wooden architecture with the southern landscape of rice fields, bamboo bridges, lotus ponds and rivers, Ao dai museum is owned by Vietnamese famous fashion designer Nguyen Sy Hoang. The museum showcases Ao dai (a traditional Vietnam dress) of different periods in the 17th and the 18th centuries, and more than 60 Ao dai owned by the Nguyen (1802-1945) kings and royal families, and dresses belonging to People’s Armed Forces Heroine Nguyen Thi Dinh, former Vice President Nguyen Thi Binh, former diplomat Ton Nu Thi Ninh and People’s Artists Tra Giang and Bach Tuyet. Stories about these Ao dai and their owners are also featured. It also displays Si Hoang’s collections which won important prizes at international contests and more than 3,000 photos of the tunic. The museum also offers exhibitions of music, literature, cinema and art, which were inspired by the traditional costume.
7. Coi Nguon museum (Phu Quoc Island)
Located on a small hill on Tran Hung Dao Street in Duong Dong Town, Phu Quoc Island, the museum was established in 2009 by Huynh Phuoc Hue who has spent over 15 years collecting thousands of antiques and artifacts. Coi Nguon Museum is expected to bring an overview of the island to its visitors with a five-floor building in an area of over 1.5 hectares. There are 2,645 antiques made from stone, pottery, bronze and fossil wood dated from the 15th century to the early 20th century and 540 artifacts consisting of furniture, artworks and fishing tool and household appliances. There are also around 100 traditional paintings.
