Women’s charm depicted by Chinese ink and dzo paper

March 16, 2008          964 views

Women with unclear faces who wear vapourous skirts… painter Bui Quang Khiem uses dzo paper (made of bark from the Dzo tree” and Chinese ink to render the charm of young girls.

Spreading a dzo paper piece on the floor, Khiem first sprays water on the paper. After spreading the water, he uses a brush to dab Chinese ink on the paper piece. Skirts gradually appear.

In Khiem’s paintings, girls may be dancers on the stage or ballet-dancers who sit on the floor… They appear from dark, dim or clear spaces of black ink on light yellow dzo paper.

Khiem is called the artist of women. His smart lines of drawing appear to be flying. The bodies and faces of the women in his paintings are mixtures of simplicity and complexity, spirituality and energy.

After two years, Khiem has returned with 19 paintings about women displayed at Module 7, 9 Au Co, Tay Ho district, Hanoi till March 27.
