The exhibition celebrates the 100th anniversary of the founding of the École des Beaux-Arts de l’Indochine (Indochina College of Fine Arts), an institution that trained generations of leading Vietnamese artists.
In addition to Mona Lisa, the exhibition features 24 other artworks by painters who studied, taught, or worked at the school.
Mai Trung Thu’s Mona Lisa is created using ink and gouache on silk. It is a derivative work inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s iconic masterpiece. The piece is part of the collection of Quang San Museum of Art, the first private art museum in Ho Chi Minh City.
The École des Beaux-Arts de l’Indochine was established in Hanoi in 1925 by French artist Victor Tardieu. It played a pivotal role in shaping modern Vietnamese art, blending Western techniques with traditional Vietnamese aesthetics. The school nurtured numerous influential artists such as To Ngoc Van, Nguyen Gia Tri, and Tran Van Can. Over the years, it has undergone several name changes and is now known as the Vietnam University of Fine Arts.
