HCM City General Publishing House recently released a book titled Tuong Go Tay Nguyen (Wooden Statues of the Central Highlands) by Dao Huy Quyen, detailing the unique artistry of the ethnic minority and their relationship with death.

The book spans 200-pages, is bilingual (Vietnamese, English) and contains hundreds of colour images. It is based on composer Dao Huy Quyen’s research compiled over years of Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands) study, and will add to the composer’s already large volume of publications on Cong Chieng (Gong) and Tay Nguyen music.

Exploring the custom of making tombs and carving sepulchral statues for use in the next life, the book looks at the history behind Tay Nguyen’s ethnic groups. The custom originates from their polytheistic religious beliefs and their belief that the dead exist alongside the living in another world.

Overall, Tuong Go Tay Nguyen reveals the complexity of the ethnic people’s art and cultural character, though the book is also its own artistic achievement, featuring the customs, rituals and psychological effects of death.

With images and documents collected over many years, Tuong Go Tay Nguyen is expected to awaken the call for Tay Nguyen cultural preservation while sharing the remarkable wooden sculptures with the world.
