Dutch and Vietnamese experts put their heads together over how to preserve Ha Noi’s Old Quarter at a seminar on January 24.
The Old Quarter Seminar, aimed to promote conservation, is part of a broader project between Viet Nam and the Netherlands , which employs the Dutch company Urban Solutions to train professionals in monument conservation and help develop a planning manual for integrated heritage management.
The move was instigated by a request from the Viet Nam Institute for Conservation of Monuments last year and receives financial support from the Dutch Government.
Economic development and modernisation are posing serious threats to the Old Quarter’s unique character. To ensure architecture is preserved for future generations, the seminar is expected to encourage investors to fund conservation projects.
The event is well timed, coming less than two years before the capital celebrates its 1,000 th birthday in 2010.
