Circus performers from HCM City are warming up for a four-week tour of France to kick off this month.
This is the fifth year the group have sent performers to tour the country where they are known as Blue Circus. The 34 performers have succeeded in winning over audiences already familiar with acts from
"Last year we got loads of encores," artist Thai Ngoc Anh says. "All of us were very proud when our French fans asked us to come back this year."
According to the performer, audience participation is the name of the game. Getting children on stage to join in the acts can really liven up the action and as a reward for their energy, the performers present these kids with traditional Vietnamese toys such as palm-leaf conical hats or dolls dressed in ao dai (traditional long dress). Even enfant terribles stay glued to their seats, enraptured by the action, the performers say.
It’s that Vietnamese touch that makes the performance really special, the group say with colourful traditional costumes from ethnic groups in the
"It’s our cheery and romantic style that people like," artist Thuy Trang says.
But despite the rapturous applause, touring abroad can have its down sides, the troupe admits. Contrary to what some may think, performing abroad doesn’t actually make them more money.
